A cooperative is a business organized, owned and controlled by the people who use its services. A cooperative operates for the benefit of its member-owners. It takes advantage of economies of scale, combining buying power and strength in numbers to save money and return profits to its members. All net earnings - after bills are paid and money is set aside for operations and improvements - are returned to cooperative members. This is called patronage refunds or dividends and is distributed to members based on the amount of energy used over the year.
A small group of people from Boyle, Garrard and Marion counties organized Inter-County Energy on June 14, 1937 after existing local utilities were unwilling to serve these rural areas with electricity. Currently, Inter-County Energy provides reliable electric service at the lowest cost consistent with sound business practice to over 27,000 member/owners in the counties of Boyle Casey, Garrard, Larue, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer, Nelson, Rockcastle, Taylor, and Washington.
Inter-County Energy operates two convenient, full-service offices. You may visit our headquarters office at 1009 Hustonville Road, Danville, Kentucky between the hours of 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM. or our Lebanon District office at 1805 Campbellsville Road, Lebanon, Kentucky from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. First time applicants for electric service will be asked to pay a one-time $50 membership fee and furnish picture identification along with their Social Security number. A deposit may be required and will be based on the most recent 12 month average usage as well as the member's credit rating. Deposits are refunded after 18 months of good credit. A member/owner may have multiple services connected under his/her membership fee with no deposit as long as the member/owner retains good credit at each location.
Receiving electric service from Inter-County Energy means that consumers are also member/owners of the cooperative. Paying a membership fee is much like buying stock in a company. It entitles the member to ownership and control of the cooperative. Member control is on a one member, one vote basis.
Inter-County Energy is governed by a six-member board of directors made up of member/owners, not employees of the cooperative. The directors represent the membership in establishing the policies and procedures of the cooperative.
Each year, the cooperative holds its Annual Meeting offering members the opportunity to elect directors.
The cooperative maintains over 3,800 miles of power lines that are exposed to natural and man-made damages or destruction. To keep outage time to a minimum and protect lines, automatic reset devices (breakers) are used. If an animal, tree limb, or other object contacts the line, the breaker operates (up to 3 times) to restore power. Breaker operations often cause digital clocks and other electronic devised to reset and flash. Some small appliances contain battery backup or other carry-through circuitry that can prevent this from happening.
Inter-County Energy will use reasonable diligence in providing consistent and uninterrupted power; however, the cooperative cannot guarantee power without interruptions or disturbances. If power is interrupted for any reason, call our toll-free, 24-hour customer services line at 1-888-266-7322.
