Generac Home Standby Generator: How it Works
With a Generac Home Standby generator, you can avoid the hassle of setting up a portable generator and running extension cords into your home when the power goes out. With the included 200 A automatic transfer switch, your generator will automatically start when a utility power outage occurs and will automatically stop when utility power is restored. You have backup power within seconds of a utility power outage – long before you would’ve had time to get the portable generator out of the garage. Click on the image below to learn how the generator works.
In a typical installation, the automatic transfer switch will be installed near your electric meter base as shown in the video above. The above video is for illustration/example purposes only, and in actual installations the generator should not be located directly in front of meter base . Your installer will be familiar with required clearances and working zones.

Your installer will schedule a time to install and will need to contact Inter-County Energy's offices to request a temporary disconnect of your electric service to allow them to safely complete the installation. The temporary disconnect/reconnect process is usually done the same day.

Who installs and maintains the generator and transfer switch?
Member selects an installer and maintenance provider of their choice.
Inter-County Energy does not install or maintain the equipment, and we do not recommend any specific providers for these services.
All warranties are provided through Generac.
What size generator do I need?
Your installer/electrician will be able to assist in proper sizing for your specific home.
Inter-County Energy will not recommend a specific size for your home but upon request, we will be happy to provide you with historical peak daily or hourly energy usage for your home that you can share with your installer/electrician to aid in sizing.
Do you want whole-home or partial backup? Sizing is heavily dependent on your large appliance and HVAC needs. The transfer switch includes Smart A/C module that can shed up to four HVAC units (in a priority order) in the event of generator overload by interrupting the 24 VAC thermostat control signal to your unit. This option can be discussed with your installer/electrician.
